Meeting sites are usually selected five to seven years in advance. The meeting rotates across the continental U.S. in an eastern/central/western pattern. Sites in Canada are considered as appropriate within the rotation. Proposals are solicited, reviewed, and then presented to the ASA Council. Factors which weigh heavily in the Council decision include:
- Attractiveness of city and facility packages, especially room rates
- City location and facilities’ sustainability initiatives and environmental impact
- Air access/service and local transportation services
- Restaurant proximity and diversity
- Geographical rotation
- Sites where attendees are afforded legal protection from discrimination on the basis of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status and socioeconomic origins, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, health conditions, political affiliation, marital status, domestic status, parental status.
- Meeting space flow - flexibility, accessibility, and compact as possible
- Extent of unionization and fair labor practices at facilities to be used for meeting space and guest rooms
- Preferred meeting dates
