How to do I join ASA (or renew my membership) online?
Log in to the ASA homepage (if you don't have a record in our system, you can create one). Once you log in you will be on your ASA Portal page. From there, click "join/renew" and fill out the membership form. We strongly encourage online renewal, as your member benefits become available immediately.
Can I pay for membership with a check or money order?
Yes. There are two options for doing this. The best way is to log into the ASA homepage (follow the directions on the question above). When you reach the end of the membership form, click "print invoice." If that is not possible for some reason, you can print the membership form (link below) and fill it out by hand.
Once you have an invoice or a completed paper membership form (you only need one or the other), send it with your check or money order to American Sociological Association, 1430 K Street NW, Suite 600, Washington, D.C. 20005. Attention: Membership.
How can I access my ASA Portal?
To access your ASA Portal, click on the "log in" link in the upper right corner of the ASA homepage.
All ASA members receive online access to the 10 ASA journals as a benefit of membership. All members (except International Associate members) can also opt-in to receiving one print journal of their choice. In addition, any ASA member may purchase additional print journal subscriptions.

Visit our Mailing and Receipts Date page to review when journal subscriptions lists are pulled, when the journal is mailed, and when it arrives in the ASA office. This should provide a general idea of when your journal should arrive.
Unfortunately, ASA is not able to change any print journal selection after you have joined or renewed. You may, however, add another print journal at any time on your ASA Portal.
ASA memberships run on a calendar year cycle (January 1 to December 31). All back issues (print journals only) already published for the membership year will be mailed within 4-6 weeks of receipt of membership. Applications received prior to October 1 will become effective for the current calendar year. Applications received on or after October 1 will be processed for the next calendar year. ASA does not offer pro-rated membership fees to members joining or renewing after January 1.
After renewing or joining for 2021, ASA members (other than Student, Unemployed, and Affiliate members) can prepay for membership through 2023. A current 2021 membership is required in order to take advantage of the pre-pay benefit. The prepayment process can be completed through you ASA Portal.
We strongly encourage online renewal, as your member benefits become available immediately. You may log on to see the status of your renewal at any time. If you renew by mail, you may receive another renewal reminder prior to ASA receiving and entering your renewal, so please allow adequate processing time. Log in to your ASA Portal to update your address and/or contact information. An instructional guide is available here. If you prefer, address changes may be sent to the Member Support Center at firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to the ASA office. Change of addresses are not accepted by telephone.
If you don't immediately see your receipt in your inbox, please check your spam filter. Receipt are automatically generated from our database and are often caught in institutional spam filters. If you still do not see it, you can access a history of your transactions and any receipt through the online ASA Portal. Simply log in here and click "Order Receipts" under the heading Member Info.
Individual memberships are non-transferable.
Membership may be cancelled by contacting the ASA Member Support Center at email@example.com, but ASA is not able to offer a refund for cancelled memberships.
If you are a current member, you may add sections or print journals by logging in to your ASA Portal.
No, section membership is reserved for individuals with current ASA membership only.
ASA does not offer lifetime memberships.
